Emerging technology: what do you need to know?

Published 26th May 2026

A new generation of weed-control systems is emerging, combining automation, sensors and artificial intelligence (AI).

These machines use cameras, GPS, LiDAR and computer vision to distinguish crops from weeds, then apply a targeted action to destroy the weeds while leaving crops untouched.

While the technology is advancing quickly, there are three main categories being evaluated by the Next Generation Weed Management project; mechanical, laser, and chemical. Each offers potential benefits, but also practical limitations requiring testing under local conditions.
